English Carling Cup - Roo wins Cup

Rooney, a first-half replacement for Michael Owen, powered a header past Brad Friedel with 16 minutes to go as United claimed their fourth League Cup final success.

Villa had taken the lead early on through a James Milner penalty but Owen levelled for United before hobbling off through a hamstring injury.

But, after a decent spell of Villa pressure, Sir Alex Ferguson's men took the lead with yet another Rooney header.

Antonio Valencia and Berbatov played a neat one-two down the right, the former's cross picked out Rooney 12 yards from goal and he strained his neck muscles to send a majestic header into the top corner.

Villa piled bodies forward in search of an equaliser but United held out to make it back-to-back Carling Cup wins.

EPL - Ramsey out for the season after surgery on broken leg

Arsenal have confirmed Aaron Ramsey sustained fractures to the tibia and fibula in his right leg in Saturday's Premier League match at Stoke and will miss the rest of the season.

A club statement said, "During yesterday's match against Stoke City, Aaron Ramsey sustained fractures to the tibia and fibula in his right leg. Yesterday evening he underwent surgery."

"The operation successfully reduced the fractures and whilst it is too soon to state an exact timescale for recovery, Aaron will certainly miss the remainder of this season. Our thoughts are with Aaron at this time and everyone at the Club wishes him all the best in making as speedy a return to action as possible."

Int'l - Ivory Coast sack coach Halilhodzic

Halilhodzic took over in 2008 and steered them to World Cup qualification but the 57-year-old has paid the price for their quarter-final elimination by Algeria.

Speculation is rife Hiddink will steer the Ivory Coast in South Africa. The Dutchman is under contract with Russia until the summer, when he will take over as Turkey coach. However, Hiddink recently revealed Didier Drogba, who he managed at Chelsea last season, has pleaded with him to take charge.

EPL - Shawcross claims 'no malice' in tackle

Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross insists there was 'absolutely no malice' in the challenge on Aaron Ramsey which led to the Arsenal player suffering a badly broken leg during the Premier League clash at the Britannia Stadium.

Ramsey was taken to hospital after a tackle by Shawcross, who was later called up to the England squad to play Egypt next week, as the Gunners came from behind to win 3-1.

Shawcross release a statement shortly after. The statement read: "There was absolutely no malice in the challenge. I would never, ever go out to hurt a fellow professional."

"I am deeply upset that Aaron has suffered such a bad injury and my thoughts are with him. I would like to send him my best wishes too for a speedy recovery."

EPL - Wenger saddened by horror Ramsey injury

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was unable to celebrate his side's vital 3-1 win at Stoke after teenager Aaron Ramsey suffered an horrific injury.

Ramsey was injured in the second half in a tackle with Ryan Shawcross, who was sent off and left the pitch in tears after seeing the extent of Ramsey's injury.

EPL - Van der Sar signs new deal

Van der Sar, 39, will now remain at Old Trafford until June 2011 after signing a new one-year deal.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was thrilled to tie up his first-choice goalkeeper for another year.

EPL - Arsenal post £35.2m profit

Arsenal have announced pre-tax profits of £35.2 million and a significant reduction in debt for the six months ending November 30, 2009.

The financial half-year results reveal Arsenal Holdings plc's total net debt has been reduced from £332.8 million to £203.6million - a reduction of £129.2 million.

The club also announced significant progress at Highbury Square, where the sale of 261 apartments raised £96.6 million - an increase of £38.2 million on 2008 - with all the proceeds used to pay off the project's debt. The group's property business recorded a pre-tax profit of £9.3 million.

Int'l - Bridge refuses England call up

Bridge, whose ex-partner had an alleged affair with Terry, was less than enthusiastic following Thursday's phone call inviting him to join up with the England squad for next Wednesday's friendly with Egypt at Wembley.

The player refusal to join up with England and Ashley Cole absence may leave Capello needing to call up both Everton's Leighton Baines and Blackburn's Stephen Warnock.

EPL - Anderson ruled out for the season

Manchester United midfielder Anderson has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a cruciate ligament injury, picked up during United's 3-0 win against West Ham on Tuesday.

The Brazil midfielder will be sent to Portugal for treatment to work with a specialist he knows from his days at Porto, with United opting against sending him to renowned knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman.

The news is another blow to United, who will also have England captain Rio Ferdinand missing for a couple of weeks with a back injury, while Ryan Giggs is out until April with a broken arm.

EPL - Van Persie could be back in early April

Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk claims Robin van Persie could be back in action at the start of April after receiving a positive update on the Arsenal forward's recovery from an ankle injury.

The player suffered a ligament damage suffered in November and there was initial fears that he will not play again for the season.

Arsenal physios are set to travel to the Netherlands in the coming weeks to check on Van Persie's progress.

Primera - Krasic eyes Spain move

CSKA Moscow winger Milos Krasic has revealed that he is looking to move to Spain this summer, after attracting interest from a number of European heavyweights with with a string of excellent displays in the Champions League.

AC Milan are one of a host of clubs that have have been linked with winger, but despite reports that a pre-contract has already been signed with the Rossoneri, Krasic revealed is still very much on the market, with La Liga his favoured destination.

EPL - Bullard makes scoring return

Jimmy Bullard, who has not featured for Hull City since suffering knee ligament damage in the defeat at Aston Villa on December 5, returned to action in the club's reserves on Tuesday night and scored in the 3-0 victory.

Boss Phil Brown will now be hoping that the talismanic midfielder will be ready to spearhead the club's push for Premier League survival.

Serie A - Inter launch appeal

Inter Milan have announced they will appeal against the three-match ban imposed on manager Jose Mourinho as well as the suspensions awarded to Esteban Cambiasso and Sulley Muntari by the Lega Calcio.

Mourinho was given the ban and fined 40,000 euros following his handcuffs gesture during Saturday's match with Sampdoria in which two Inter players were sent off.

Muntari was suspended insulting match officials while the Cambiasso was punished for attempting to punch a Sampdoria player.

EPL - Tevez poised to return for Chelsea tie

Carlos Tevez, who has been granted compassionate leave by Man City after his daughter was born six weeks premature, is set to return to the team in time for Saturday's game against Chelsea.

Mancini stated after the 0-0 draw with Liverpool that he had ordered Tevez to return to England and described the player's absence as a "big problem" for the club.

Int'l - Walcott left out of Under-21s squad

Arsenal winger Theo Walcott has not been included in the England Under-21 squad for the European Championship clash against Greece at Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium next week.

The 20-year-old has not played for the senior team this season but could be used by Fabio Capello in the friendly against Egypt a week on Wednesday, the same day Stuart Pearce's Under-21s play.

Christian Panucci, who has been with Parma for seven months, has had his Parma contract terminated by mutual consent.

The former Italy defender made 19 appearances for the club.

EPL - Pienaar charged with drink driving

The 27-year-old was arrested early on Sunday morning and has been charged with drink driving.

The South Africa international will appear at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on March 9.

EPL - Lennon suffer injury setback

Lennon, who has not represented Tottenham since December, has suffered a setback in his recovery from a groin problem.

Manager Redknapp is hopeful to have winger at his disposal again in "a couple of weeks".

Primera - Yokohama F Marinos close in on Nakamura deal

Yokohama F Marinos president Akira Kaetsu is confident the club will complete the signing of midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura from Espanyol before the start of the 2010 J-League season.

EPL - Champions League play-off plan

Currently the teams finishing in the top four positions are handed entry to Europe's elite competition, either in the main draw or at the qualifying stage.

The Premier League is believed to be considering a proposal to introduce a play-off, a mini-knockout competition between clubs finishing from fourth to seventh place, to decide who will take the fourth Champions League spot.

EPL - Midfielder Fellaini out for six months

Fellaini was caught by a two-footed tackle from Sotirios Kyrgiakos during the 1-0 loss but the full extent of the injury has only just been discovered after the Belgium midfielder visited a specialist.

Everton have been plagued by injuries over the past couple of seasons but with Mikel Arteta and Phil Neville returning recently, and Phil Jagielka closing in on a comeback, the blow has been eased somewhat.

Serie A - Lengthy lay-off for defender Gamberini

Fiorentina defender Alessandro Gamberini will be sidelined until May after undergoing shoulder surgery on Tuesday.

Gamberini, who has made 15 league appearances and played in six Champions League games for the club this season, sustained the injury during Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Sampdoria.

EPL - Gunners duo set to miss Porto clash

Andrei Arshavin has revealed he expects to miss the Champions League tie with Porto because of a hamstring injury.

Midfielder Alex Song is also likely to miss the match due to a knee ligament problem, although Eduardo and Samir Nasri are both expected to be fit.

Primera - Xavi adds to Barca injury woes

Barcelona have suffered another blow with the news that key midfielder Xavi will be sidelined for around two weeks through injury.

Losing Xavi is a further setback for Barca, who also saw midfielder Seydou Keita limp out of the Atletico match after just five minutes with a hamstring injury that will see him missing for up to four weeks.

Intl - Hiddink confirms Russia departure

Guus Hiddink has confirmed he will leave his position as Russia coach when his contract expires in the summer.

Manchester City, Liverpool, Juventus, Turkey and Heerenveen are all reported to have shown interest while Hiddink's representative recently claimed he would like to lead Nigeria in South Africa after the dismissal of Shaibu Amodu. Intl - Brady to leave Ireland role

Arsenal director of youth development Liam Brady has put club before country and confirmed he will be standing down as assistant manager of Republic of Ireland in April.

Brady became the country's assistant manager in 2008 when Giovanni Trapattoni arrived to replace Steve Staunton, but he has now revealed he feels it is taking too much time away from his work at Arsenal.

Primera - Barca defensive crisis deepens

Barcelona's have been dealt yet another defensive blow after Dmytro Chygrynskiy became the latest player to be ruled out of their weekend trip to Atletico Madrid.

Barca's defence will also be without Eric Abidal, Gerard Pique, Rafael Marquez, Dani Alves and Yaya Toure for the visit to the Vicente Calderon.

Primera - Benzema a doubt ahead of Lyon return

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema will almost certainly miss out on a return to Lyon, after medical tests revealed he will be sidelined for at least a week.

Dubai government-owned Emirates airline is to sponsor AC Milan from next season in a four-year shirt deal worth around 50 million euros, replacing Austrian online betting group Bwin.

Milan, third in Serie A after an inconsistent first half of the season, have often been linked in the media with Arab investors but Berlusconi has denied he wants to sell.

Serie A - Reja to replace sacked Ballardini

Lazio have sacked coach Davide Ballardini and replaced him with former Napoli boss Edy Reja.

Ballardini who replaced Delio Rossi last summer, had been under immense pressure following last weekend's 1-0 defeat to Catania that dropped Lazio to 18th place in Serie A, one point behind safety.

EPL - Hull and Arsenal fined

Players from both sides became embroiled in ugly scenes in a Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium on December 19 after Samir Nasri appeared to tread on the ankle of Hull's Richard Garcia.

It sparkled off a mass confrontation in front of referee Steve Bennett.

Hull City have been fined £40,000 and Arsenal £20,000 and both clubs warned over their future conduct for failing to control their players in a Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium on December 19.

EPL - Broken ankle rules Ashley Cole out for three months

Cole sustained the injury in Chelsea's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Everton on Wednesday night when he was involved in a challenge with Landon Donovan.

Chelsea have confirmed that the player will be sidelined for three months after fracturing his ankle, meaning that he may miss the rest of the season in the build-up to the World Cup finals in South Africa.

EPL - Giggs out for four weeks with broken arm

Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs will be out of action for four weeks after fracturing his right arm in Wednesday night's Premier League match at Aston Villa.

The veteran midfielder damaged his right arm in a collision with Steve Sidwell during the 1-1 draw at Villa Park.

Giggs will miss Premier League games against Everton, West Ham and Wolves.

EPL - Terry dropped as England captain

The FA have confirmed that John Terry has been dropped as England captain by Fabio Capello after meeting with the Italian at Wembley on Friday.

The former skipper had found himself increasingly under pressure after revelations that he had an affair with the ex-girlfriend of former team-mate Wayne Bridge.

Rio Ferdinand will step up from vice-captain to take the armband from John Terry for the next match against Egypt on March 3 and will most likely be on trial for the position in South Africa, with Steven Gerrard taking the vice-captain role.

EPL - Saha extends contract until 2012

Everton striker Louis Saha, whose contract ends at the season, has signed a two-year contract extension which will keep him at the club until the summer of 2012.

The striker was attracting interest from a number of clubs but opted to extend his stay with the Toffees having joined from Manchester United in 2008.

EPL - Johnson out for the season

Fulham have confirmed that Andy Johnson has been ruled out for the rest of the season following surgery on his knee.

The club sent Johnson to America earlier this week where he was operated on by the man credited for saving the careers of Alan Shearer and Michael Owen - world-renowned surgeon Dr Richard Steadman.

EPL - Chelsea's transfer ban lifted

Chelsea's transfer ban has been lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and the club have been cleared of any wrongdoing regarding the transfer of Gael Kakuta from Lens in 2007.

All sanctions placed upon the Premier League club and the player have been cancelled.

It is said that Roman Abramovich will authorise a £200 million summer transfer extravaganza to capture Franck Ribery and Sergio Aguero.

EPL - Chainrai takes over Pompey

Portsmouth have been taken over by Balram Chainrai, after he exercised his right to buy 90% shareholding, but the Hong Kong businessman has no interest in running the club himself and is seeking for new owners.

The club will now apply to HMRC to adjourn next week's winding-up hearing to allow time for the club to be stabilised and find new owners.

EPL - Bridge and Lescott to return against Hull

Manchester City have revealed both Wayne Bridge and Joleon Lescott are in line to feature against Hull on Saturday.

Bridge has been out of action since suffering a knee injury against former club Chelsea on December 5, while Lescott had knee surgery after suffering a problem at Bolton the following week.

Primera - Onesimo takes reins from Mandilibar at Valladolid

Real Valladolid have sacked coach Jose Luis Mendilibar and reserve team coach Onesimo would take over first-team duties.

Mendilibar had been in charge of Valladolid since the summer of 2006 and guided them to a historic promotion in his first year, smashing all second division records, including the first team to record 88 points and the earliest ever promotion when they secured their top-flight status in April.

Primera - De la Pena facing three months out

Espanyol captain Ivan de la Pena will undergo surgery on a lower leg injury and could be sidelined for another three months.

De la Pena has made just six league and cup appearances for Espanyol this season.
