Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has stressed that the club will not be rushing back Steven Gerrard from his injury lay-off.
Gerrard, 31, last featured for Liverpool in March, having undergone a groin operation and then suffering a setback with an infection in his rehabilitation during pre-season.
The midfielder has returned to training but is unlikely to feature against Tottenham this weekend, although he could make his return in next Wednesday's Carling Cup meeting with Brighton.

Iniesta out for a month
Andres Iniesta will be sidelined for around a month after suffering an injury during Barcelona's Champions League draw with AC Milan, the Primera Division club have confirmed.
Iniesta limped out of the match at the Nou Camp in the 38th minute to be replaced by Cesc Fabregas and subsequent tests have revealed the Spain international suffered a hamstring tear.
Iniesta is now set to be out of action for around four weeks, according to a statement on the Barca website, and he joins summer signing Alexis Sanchez in the treatment room.

Chelsea have a agreed a deal to sign Somalian-born starlet Islam Feruz from Celtic, the forward's agent has confirmed.
Feruz has just turned 16-years-old but turned down the offer of a first professional contract with Scottish giants Celtic in favour of a move to the Premier League.

Manchester United have revealed midfielder Tom Cleverley suffered ligament damage in his foot, but no break, and is expected to be out for four weeks following a tackle by Kevin Davies during Saturday's 5-0 win at Bolton.
Cleverley limped out of the weekend victory at the Reebok Stadium after Bolton striker Davies was guilty of a robust challenge on the playmaker which was condemned by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

UEFA uphold ban on Wenger
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will serve a two-match Champions League suspension after his appeal against the punishment was rejected by UEFA.
The Frenchman was initially given the suspension in the wake of the Gunners' play-off first leg at home to Udinese on August 16.
However, the club appealed and the sanction was postponed but European football's governing body have reinstated it after turning down the appeal.
Arsenal were also fined 10,000 euros (£8,700) for improper conduct of their officials.

Fenerbahce have opened a case at the Court of Arbitration for Sport as they seek damages from UEFA and the Turkish Football Federation following their exclusion from this season's Champions League.
The Turkish champions were thrown out of Europe's elite club competition as part of an investigation into match-fixing which has seen more than 30 players and officials jailed pending trial, including Fener chairman Aziz Yildirim.
A statement from the club confirmed they were taking their case to the highest sporting authority.

Gerrard targets Spurs for comeback

Valencia complete deal for Ruiz
Valencia have signed centre-back Victor Ruiz from Napoli on a five-year deal.
Valencia technical secretary Braulio Vazquez believes the acquisition of the 22-year-old Ruiz, who helped Spain win the European Under-21 Championship earlier this summer, will prove to be ''an important step forward'' for Los Che.
He told the Valencia website: ''[Ruiz is] of the highest level in Europe. He has great technique, positional sense and strength. He will help to complement our existing defence and offer something different to our squad.
''He is a player with a big future ahead of him, and will definitely shine in the present."

Messi named Best Player in Europe
UEFA has named Barcelona forward Lionel Messi as the Best Player in Europe for the 2010-11 season.
Messi claimed 38 votes for the newly-created award, putting him some distance ahead of Barcelona team-mate Xavi, in second place with 11 votes, and third-placed Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who received just three votes.
Messi enjoyed a hugely successful season with his club, scoring 31 goals in the league to help clinch the league title and putting in a man-of-the-match performance in the Champions League final victory over Manchester United.

Cech set to return for Man Utd clash
Petr Cech is ready to give Chelsea a boost after he predicted he will be back in action sooner than the original timescale.
Cech was ruled out for a month on August 18 after he suffered a knee injury in training. Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas initially thought the situation could have been even worse, after the keeper fell under serious weight.
It was expected Cech would be out until the back end of September, but the towering keeper is already claiming he will return inside that time frame. The timing of Cech's comeback is critical, with Manchester United scheduled for September 18.
Spanish strike ends
The Primera Division season will finally get under way on Saturday after a second weekend of strike action was averted.
Talks between the Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP) and Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) finally reached a resolution on Thursday afternoon.
The AFE announced earlier this month that players from the top two divisions in Spain would go on strike for the first two rounds of the 2011-12 season unless an agreement with the LFP was reached.
The AFE wanted a guaranteed fund to protect players' wages in the event of their clubs being declared insolvent and they claim clubs in Spain owe around €50 million in unpaid salaries to more than 200 players from the end of last season.
However, a statement on the AFE website confirmed the matter was now resolved.
Discussions between the two parties last week failed to find a resolution, leading to the scheduled opening round of Primera Division and Segunda Division fixtures being postponed at the weekend, but the second round of matches includes champions Barcelona hosting Villarreal on Monday and Real Madrid travelling to Real Zaragoza on Sunday will now take place.
The first week's fixtures are scheduled to be played on December 28, but an agreement with the AFE still needs to be reached, as players' contracts ban them from playing during the festive period.
Strike threat to Serie A
Italian football's governing body may have no choice but to postpone the first round of Serie A games because a new collective bargaining agreement has not been signed.
Emergency meetings were held on Thursday in Milan in the hope that the Lega Serie A and the Italian Players' Union (AIC) would reach common ground.
The players have threatened to strike if a new agreement is not signed before Saturday, when the season is due to get under way.
The AIC said the Lega Serie A had still not signed the agreement reached with players after intense negotiations last season, when strikes were twice narrowly averted. The Lega Serie A requested changes to the players' proposed agreement.
The AIC were especially unhappy about clubs trying to force players to move in the last year of their contracts, and with coaches forcing unwanted players to train away from the first team.
An old collective agreement expired at the end of the 2009-10 season and talks for its renewal continued throughout the 2010-11 campaign and this summer.
Earlier on Thursday, Abete gave the league and the AIC a 24-hour deadline to reach an agreement before moving the first round of Serie A games to a later date.
Aquilani to complete Milan move
Liverpool have confirmed a deal is in place for Alberto Aquilani to join AC Milan on loan.
The deal will see Aquilani spend the season at the San Siro with an option to make the signing permanent. It has been reported that Milan will be obliged to sign the Italy midfielder if he makes 25 appearances.

Wenger cleared to face Udinese
Arsene Wenger will be allowed on the touchline for the Champions League play-off second leg against Udinese after UEFA agreed to defer a two-match ban pending the outcome of an appeal.
UEFA decided Wenger had passed messages to Pat Rice in the dug-out through first-team coach Boro Primorac. The governing body issued the two-match ban against Wenger after he was found guilty of breaching the terms of an earlier ban and fined Arsenal €10,000 (£8,743).
Arsenal immediately indicated their intention to appeal, but for the purposes of speed then decided to initially seek a delay to the ban before contesting it fully. UEFA have agreed to the request.

Anzhi Makhachkala have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Inter Milan to sign Samuel Eto'o, who will now head to Russia to undergo a medical.

Milan confirm Aquilani talks
AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi has confirmed the Italian club are in talks with Liverpool over the signing of midfielder Alberto Aquilani.
Aquilani, 27, spent last season on loan at Juventus, where he enjoyed a revival after a torrid first year with Liverpool, but the clubs were unable to agree a fee and he spent pre-season back on Merseyside.

Mancini: Nasri deal close
Roberto Mancini hinted he expects to finalise Samir Nasri's move from Arsenal to Manchester City "this week", amid widespread reports that a deal is almost complete.
Several reports on Friday claimed Nasri is set to undergo a medical at Eastlands, ahead of signing a five-year deal.
Mancini expressed his frustration last week that the deal had not yet been completed and, asked if there has been progress since, Mancini said: "I hope. I hope we can complete our target. The season is long, it's hard, and we need [to do this]."
Mancini said that, due to the failure to offload squad players such as Emmanuel Adebayor and Craig Bellamy, it has been difficult to complete their transfer business.

Falcao, 25, will join the Spanish club subject to passing a medical, with his Porto team-mate Ruben Micael following him to Madrid in a separate deal.
Colombian international Falcao has scored 73 goals in 84 games for Porto, and last year achieved a haul of 38 as his team won the domestic double and the Europa League.

Spanish strike talks break down

The Spanish professional footballers' union (AFE) announced that players from the top two divisions would go on strike for the opening two weeks of the 2011-12 season unless an agreement with the Liga de Futbol Profesional (LFP) was reached over a new collective bargaining agreement.
The AFE want a guaranteed fund to protect players' wages in the event of their clubs being declared insolvent.
The AFE and LFP met in Madrid but no agreement was reached and the two parties will meet again on Friday.

Atletico confirm Falcao interest
Atletico Madrid have confirmed their interest in Porto striker Falcao and acknowledged the deal could lead to Diego Forlan's departure.
Atletico are currently rebuilding the squad following the sale of Sergio Aguero to Manchester City, and Falcao recently confirmed he would welcome a move to the Rojiblancos.
Forlan has long been linked with a move away from the Vicente Calderon and, with Inter Milan said to have expressed an interest as they seek a replacement for exit-bound Samuel Eto'o, general manager Miguel Angel Gil Marin has suggested a deal could be possible.
Atletico have also been tipped to sign Espanyol striker Pablo Osvaldo, and Madrid-based newspaper AS believes Forlan would welcome the chance of a fresh start at Inter.

Arsene Wenger hailed the leadership qualities of Robin van Persie after confirming the Dutchman will be Arsenal's new captain.
Van Persie takes over from Cesc Fabregas following the Spain international's move to Barcelona, assuming the role of captain seven years after he moved to the Gunners.

FC Porto deal for Defour
FC Porto have finalised the signing of Standard Liege captain Steven Defour, subject to the Belgium international passing a medical.
Defour, 23, was previously linked with many big clubs, including Manchester United and Liverpool, while earlier this summer there was a concrete approach from Lokomotiv Moscow that Defour declined.
A later offer from Udinese was also rebuffed, as the Italian club intended to loan Defour out to Spanish La Liga debutants Granada. In spite of the interest, Defour has continued to train with Standard, but he has not taken part in any of their games so far this season.
It was around that time rumours of Porto's interest surfaced, with claims also made that former Standard coach Luciano D'Onofrio was involved. Standard are reported to receive around €6 million for their captain. A fifth of that fee will go to KRC Genk, where Defour first made his name.
As Standard skipper, Defour won two league titles, the Belgian Cup and the Supercup twice. Individually, he won the Golden Shoe in 2007. In Portugal, he will face off with fellow Belgian international Axel Witsel, who went to Benfica earlier, also from Standard.

Gervinho claim dismissed by the FA
The Ivorian who received a straight red will now miss Arsenal's next three games.
Arsenal lodged a claim that the standard punishment of three matches was clearly excessive.
A commission heard the claim today and dismissed it, meaning the player must serve a three-match suspension with immediate effect.

Ayala joins Norwich from Liverpool
Liverpool have announed that Norwich have completed the signing of defender Daniel Ayala.
Ayala, 20, spent four years at Anfield after joining the club from Sevilla in 2007 but made only five first-team appearances. He spent time on loan in the Championship with both Hull and Derby last season.
