WC2010 - Lippi cuts squad

Juventus defender Fabio Grosso and Udinese midfielder Antonio Candreva have been cut from the Italy squad for the World Cup as coach Marcello Lippi reduced his 30-man provisional group to 28.

Grosso was a pivotal player for Italy four years ago, scoring the decisive first goal against Germany in the semi-final and then the winning spot-kick in the penalty shootout against France in the final.

The 32-year-old returned to Italy last summer after two years with French club Lyon, where he struggled to make an impression.

Candreva made his debut with the Azzurri last November in a friendly against Holland, but he also misses out after failing to shine in a poor Juventus side.

Lippi will further reduce his squad to the final 23 by June 1, with Italy training in Sestriere from Sunday onwards.
