EPL - Essien signs new contract

Chelsea have confirmed that midfielder Michael Essien has signed a two-year contract extension at Stamford Bridge.

Essien, who has not represented Chelsea since December due to injury, is now tied to the club until 2015 after committing his future to Carlo Ancelotti's Double winners.

A knee problem prevented Essien from featuring for the club in the second half of the season and ruled him out of Ghana's World Cup campaign, but the 27-year-old has at least been heartened by news of the new deal.

Essien joined Chelsea from Lyon in the summer of 2005 and while he has suffered extensively from injuries in recent seasons, he remains one of the Premier League's leading midfielders.
