New West Ham manager Avram Grant has made former Aston Villa midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger his first signing at Upton Park, with the Germany international joining on a free transfer from Lazio.
The midfielder joined Lazio from Stuttgart on a short term contract in January, but struggled to break into the Bianconeri's first-team - his failure to make an impression eventually costing him a place in Germany's World Cup squad.
Hitzlsperger is no stranger to the Premier League having played for five years at Villa Park, and will now try his hand for another claret and blue team in the top flight after signing a three-year contract with an option for a fourth year with the Hammers.
